First hand experience for a first class design

Designers used the opinions of more than 120 train drivers to fine-tune the blueprint for a new fleet of metropolitan trains in Western Australia.

The Western Australian Government wanted to ensure that the new three-car train that will operate between Clarkson and Mildurah is comfortable and ergonomically efficient.

WA’s present fleet of metropolitan trains had required extensive modifications because of ergonomic problems.

A full-scale model driver’s cabin was used to glean feedback from the drivers and the same model will later be converted into a simulator in the next stage of the design process.

A joint venture of EDI Rail and Bombardier Transportation won a $437m contract to build and maintain the 31 three-car sets and construct a railcar depot at Nowergup.

The first batch of the rail cars will be commissioned by September 2004, the government said.
