The Victorian Government has released the final designs of the new Melton Station and four level crossing removals on the Melton Line – which will soon transform the way people travel in Melbourne’s booming west.
Minister for Transport Infrastructure Danny Pearson announced a new rail bridge will be built to ensure traffic is no longer stuck at the level crossings on Coburns and Exford roads.
“We’re getting rid of these four dangerous and congested level crossings to make Melton boom gate free – which will cut congestion in Melbourne’s booming west,” he said.
New road bridges with dedicated shared use paths will also be delivered along Ferris Road in Melton and Hopkins Road in Truginina – making journeys safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
The new Melton Station will be built with four platforms to cater for one of the fastest growing communities in Australia – paving the way for more services and boosting capacity on the line.
The station can be accessed from both sides of the rail line and each platform will be accessible from lifts and stairs.
The elevated station will also include pick up and drop off zones, a new air-conditioned waiting room and staffed ticket office, along with lighting and security cameras installed throughout the precinct.
More than 850 submissions from locals helped shape the final designs, with the community wanting to improve passenger facilities and safety at the new Melton Station – along with planting a wide range of native and indigenous plants, trees and grasses.
The new Melton Station will open and the four dangerous and congested level crossings will be gone for good in 2026 – two years ahead of schedule – with construction set to begin later this year.
In a separate package of works, planning is progressing on the Labor Government’s $650 million Melton Line Upgrade, which will allow nine-car VLocity trains to travel on the line, reducing crowding and increasing passenger capacity by 50 per cent.
The Level Crossing Removal Project is removing 110 level crossings by 2030, with the Lilydale, Sunbury, Pakenham, Cranbourne, Frankston and Werribee lines to be boom-gate free – changing the way people live, work and travel.
