<p>The Victorian Government will appeal a recent court decision on public transport fare evasion.</p> <p>A man who did not buy a ticket on a tram because he only had notes and not coins was cleared of fare evasion charges last month.</p> <p>State transport minister Peter Batchelor said he has received advice from the Government Solicitor’s Office that the decision was incorrect.</p> <p>The government is now seeking leave to appeal in the Supreme Court of Victoria.</p> <p>Mr Batchelor said Melbourne relies on a viable public transport system and the government has a responsibility to protect that system.</p> <p>“Public transport is not free and commuters must buy a ticket,” he said.</p> <br />
