<p>The theft earlier this month of 400 kg of chemical explosives from a train near Newcastle has given the Container Owners Association a new sense of urgency on security matters.</p> <p>“The Australian branch of the Container Owners Association met earlier this year and formed a working group to review handling and securing of containers on rail,” spokesman Richard Sykes told <em>Lloyd’s List DCN.</em> </p> <p>“Currently we are preparing a paper for review by the industry towards the end of the year.</p> <p>“This paper would then be put forward to Australian Standards Committee, of which the COA is a member, for approval and to form an Australian standard.”</p> <p>Mr Sykes said that after the formation of the working group at the last COA members meeting in Antwerp he would attend the next meeting in Singapore next month and reinforce the issue.</p> <p>Working group members are: Richard Sykes, of SCF Containers Bob Cotton, of Queensland Rail Graham Trad, of CIMC Australia Colin Thew, of Toll Transport Con Alexandrides, of Pacific National Chris Henderson, of Trade Corp and Garry Pinder, of Intermodal Solutions. </p> <br />
