<p>EDI Rail will design and supply BHP Billiton’s Pilbara operations with 13 heavy haul diesel electric locomotives.</p> <p>The contract includes the provision of parts and support services plus options for the supply of further locomotives to support BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s mine expansion plans, EDI Rail said.</p> <p>The 13 locomotives – SD70ACe models with 3,200 kW traction and 16-cylinder engines – will be used to haul iron from the Pilbara mines to Port Hedland.</p> <p>They will be built at EDI Rail’s partner General Motors Electro Motive Division facilities in Canada and shipped to Port Hedland for commissioning and handover by EDI Rail.</p> <p>EDI Rail chief executive Guy Wannop said the contract was a significant step in developing its business in the design, supply and maintenance of heavy duty rollingstock for the mining industry.</p> <br />
