<p>The Otago Regional Council has given the go-ahead for a feasibility study to shift freight from road to rail between Dunedin and Port Chalmers.</p> <p>The move is part of the Government’s revised land transport strategies, which include increased funding for "Alternative to Roading" proposals. </p> <p>Port Otago deputy chief executive Geoff Plunket said the company supported the initiative. </p> <p>A council report said State Highway 88, between Dunedin and Port Chalmers, is well known as a route with a large volume of trucks carrying freight – primarily containers and logs – to Port Otago. </p> <p>For years, community concerns have been expressed in respect of safety issues arising from increased volumes of heavy traffic on the road. </p> <br />
