Downer signs $225m M-set maintenance extension

Sydney Trains has exercised a 10-year extension of Downer EDI’s contract to maintain the Millennium fleet of trains, also known as the M-set.

The Millennium fleet was delivered by Downer EDI over three years beginning in 2002, when it was known as EDi Rail.

The freshly-extended maintenance contract covers all 35 four-car trains, and is worth $225 million, Downer chief executive Grant Fenn said.

Fenn said the contract consolidated the company’s position as “Australia’s leading provider of passenger rolling stock asset management services”.

“In addition to another 10 years of Millennium maintenance, Downer will maintain the Waratah trains for another 26 years and, in the near future, will maintain the new Sydney Growth trains for 25 years and Victoria’s High Capacity Metro Trains for 30 years.”

The Sydney Growth trains are an addition to the initial Waratah Fleet.

And the Victorian HCMT tender was recently won by Downer, who are working with CRRC Changchun and Plenary to deliver that fleet.

The 10-year extension of the M-set maintenance deal will commence in June this year.

“We look forward to continuing to deliver valuable rail solutions for our customers across Australia,” Fenn said.
