Downer EDI sticks up for Millennium train

<p>Downer EDI has defended the quality of its Millennium train after NSW transport services minister Michael Costa decided to defer a third tranche of the trains.</p> <p>RailCorp will now seek expressions of interest from rollingstock manufacturers for a further 498 carriages for its suburban fleet, Mr Costa said.</p> <p>Downer EDI managing director Stephen Gillies said the company is proud of the train it had manufactured and would push to have the third tranche built. </p> <p>Michael Costa had admitted the Millennium train was now the most reliable vehicle in the Sydney suburban fleet, he said.</p> <p>"It should be noted that the minister announced that he had deferred a decision on the third tranche of Millennium trains," Mr Gillies said.</p> <p>"We will be pressing hard for the award of this tranche whether it is part of the steady fleet purchasing program or separately because we believe this is a proven vehicle which is not only delivering a superior service but also value for money." </p> <br />
