The construction industry’s approach to diversity continues to improve, according to Victorian Level Crossing Removal Projects Senior Project Manager Gosia Suchorska.
With nearly 20 years of experience, Suchorska heads up the Level Crossing Removal Projects at Robinsons Road, Deer Park and Fitzgerald Road, Ardeer, and said she’d witnessed the progression first hand.
She arrived in Australia from Poland in 2003 and has worked in a variety of roles since. This includes as a receptionist, junior estimator, engineering assistant, site engineer, acting project manager and now Senior Project Manager.
Leading a large team out in Melbourne’s west, Suchorska has become an advocate for diverse workplaces in the construction industry.
Speaking on International Women’s Day, she said there had been large changes in the industry since she started 18 years ago.
“Our workplace encourages diversity, and we offer an environment where career progression is encouraged,” she said.
It will be a busy 12 months for Suchorska and her team as works continue forward to remove both level crossings to ease congestion in Melbourne’s west.
Robinsons Road will be removed by building a road underpass under the rail line. The level crossing at Fitzgerald Road will go by building a new road bridge. Major construction is well underway at these crossings, with both projects fast tracked for completion by 2023.
International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
