Deadman’s pedal back-up for Sydney passenger trains

Sydney’s outer suburban Tangara passenger trains will have a back-up emergency braking system installed by Monday (April 5), the New South Wales Government said.

The $33m system backs up the much maligned deadman’s pedal system and will apply the brakes when it fails to detect driver activity.

Installation of the system follows recommendations from the interim McInerney report into the Waterfall train crash in January 2003.

The system will be installed in 41 Tangara trains.
