Damage on submerged Darwin-Adelaide line being checked

With floodwaters cutting two sections of the Darwin-to-Adelaide rail link north of Katherine, Freightlink is to assess the damage by helicopter today (Monday, March 5).

The line was expected to be out of action until Saturday at the earliest.

"We’ve approached those two sections from opposite directions and we’ve found washaways of the ballasts and formation," FreightLink chief executive John Fullerton told the ABC.

"We’re not able to proceed any further because there is water over the track and we can’t get access by road or rail.

"We have put in alternative plans in place to deliver freight into Katherine from Adelaide and looking at road bringing that into Darwin, but of course that’s also been subject to the passibility of the Stuart Highway," he said.
