Costa sprays against the wind on capsicum trial claim

Western Australian transport authorities have refuted New South Wales transport services minister Michael Costa’s suggestion that train guards in Perth have trialed a controversial capsicum gel spray.

They say they have no knowledge of the trial he referred to when suggesting that Sydney train guards should be equipped with the gel.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Mr Costa’s office maintains transit officers briefed him on the gel when he was on a train in Fremantle earlier this year.

But his WA counterpart, Alannah MacTiernan, said the gel had never been used on Perth’s government-owned transit systems, the paper said.

The NSW Police Association and the Greens have already opposed Mr Costa’s gel spray idea.
