The New South Wales Government has scrapped its $1.2bn Epping to Parramatta rail link.

State transport services minister Michael Costa deferred the project indefinitely in favour of improving Sydney’s existing network.

The project, which aimed to provide a direct rail link between North Sydney and the far west of the city, would only provide an extra 15,000 trips and this did not justify the expenditure, Mr Costa said.

"The community doesn’t want another Airport Rail Link," he said.

The eastern part of the project from Chatswood to Epping has already started and will be completed, Mr Costa said.

He also put Sydney’s planned $320m integrated ticketing scheme on notice.

Rather than trying to put 73 fares onto one ticket it was more sensible to look at why there were so many fares in the first place, he said.
