Contract win sees PN deliver on QLD coal strategy

Pacific National has scored a contract to haul coal for BHP Mitsui Coal which the company says is a “coup” for its growth aspirations in Queensland.

The long term, take or pay contract will see PN haul up to 4.2m tonnes of coal for BHP Mitsui Coal in Queensland starting from January 1 2013.

The coal will be hauled via QR National’s Northern Missing Link which will connect the Newlands and Goonyella coal systems when the project is completed in early 2012.

Asciano chief executive Grant Mullen said winning the contract with such a major coal producer is a coup for the company’s growth aspirations into the key expansion of the newly expanded port of Abbot Point.

“Our focus on customer service outcomes combined with our unique commercial structure is driving positive performance outcomes for all our customers and this is being recognised by both existing and potential customers in Queensland,” Mullen said.

“Asciano is offering an innovative and flexible rail haulage approach. The result is an innovative operational solution and contract that drives the efficient behaviour of both rail and coal operator.

“The successful ramp up of our operations is a testament to our Queensland workforce and management team and reinforces our ability to deliver on our Queensland coal strategy.”
