A two-week 24/7 construction blitz will kick off in January to upgrade rail infrastructure in the west of Melbourne.
As part of major works to improve train services to Melton and Tarneit, crews will be extending the platforms at Caroline Springs and Deer Park stations.
Work will also be undertaken to build the new West Tarneit Station.
As a result, buses will replace trains on sections of the Ballarat and Geelong lines from Saturday 10 January to Saturday 24 January.
The platform extensions are part of the Melton Line Upgrade, enabling longer nine-car VLocity trains to run on the line from 2027. Running longer trains will boost passenger capacity by 50 per cent during peak times.
During the blitz, crews will also complete signalling works near the new Cobblebank train stabling yard being built as part of the upgrade.
In Melton, crews will continue building two new rail bridges at Coburns and Exford roads, along with the new Melton Station, while also installing signalling, drainage and underground services.
Melton will be boom gate-free, with Melton Station set to open next year. The station will feature four platforms to support one of Victoria’s fastest growing communities.
While trains are not running, work will continue on the new road bridges over the rail line at Ferris Road in Melton and Hopkins Road in Truganina. These bridges, which the Victorian Government said will improve safety and ease congestion on local roads, are due to open to traffic next year.
At West Tarneit, crews will carry out critical drilling works beneath the rail line, prepare platform canopies for installation, and install services under the tracks.
The new West Tarneit Station will feature a four bay bus interchange, a 400-space car park, and an accessible underpass, making it easier for passengers to move between both sides of the rail corridor.
