A key freight line reopened last weekend after a train partially derailed north of Port Pirie in South Australia on January 6.
The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) said the East West rail corridor reopened following the completion of “complex” restoration works.
Services have recommenced from Sydney to Perth, Melbourne to Perth and Adeliade to Darwin.
The ARTC carried out a 97-hour operation to recover the 11 wagons that derailed and restore the track, while working in challenging weather conditions including temperatures above 40C.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation, and the ARTC said it will continue to work closely with the train operator and the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator.
ARTC thanked Aurizon for supporting the recovery operation with additional equipment and crews.
