The Narre Warren community turned out in force recently to celebrate the completion of major works on the project, which removed the level crossing at Webb Street and built a new Narre Warren Station.
Hundreds of coffees, sausages, baked goods and boxes of popcorn were handed out, with entertainment from roving performers including a balloonist, face-painter and DJ.
300 sausages, veggie sausages, bread and tasty treats were supplied by local businesses including AR Afghan Butcher and Supermarket, and Valley Fair Continental Bakery – all served up by the Narre Warren Scouts.
200 vouchers to local businesses were given away in the ever-popular Spin & Win competition.
The celebration event also welcomed the return of one of Narre Warren’s favourite sons. A statue of football and radio star Brendan Fevola, who grew up in Narre Warren, will now temporarily take pride of place inside the new station forecourt for four weeks.
The statue will welcome commuters making use of the new, modern facilities, which have been completed by the project team since train services resumed in March. The new station features modern elevated platforms, accessed by lifts and stairs with an enclosed, air-conditioned waiting room, and new ticket office in the station.
The level crossing at Webb Street was removed for good in 2023, and the new Narre Warren Station opened earlier this year.
Over recent months, finishing works included upgrading 672 car spaces, planting more than 63,000 new plants, shrubs and grasses, and completing a shared use path, to better connect pedestrians and cyclists through the precinct.
The Webb Street level crossing was one of the most dangerous in Melbourne, with 19 near misses between 2012 and 2023. The boom gates were down up to a third of the morning peak, causing congestion for 13,200 vehicles every day.
