CargoSprinters come to town

CRT Group’s first modular freight train has arrived in Australia and will go through its accreditation paces before entering service later this year.

The &#8220CargoSprinter&#8221 uses Volvo truck motors to power a fast, lightweight train. It has cabins at both ends to allow single person operation and eliminate the need for shunting.

CargoSprinter technology is already being used in Europe.

CRT’s first unit was built in Germany, but executive director Colin Rees said it has been Australianised and the company is looking at manufacturing locally.

The project has received nearly $7m in support from the Australian Greenhouse Office in recognition of the environmental benefits from transferring freight from road to rail.
