Canberra work rolls on in new year

Light rail vehicle testing will soon advance to the Federal Highway and Northbourne Avenue, as the Canberra Metro light rail project presses forward to a scheduled opening in early 2019.

Canberra Metro’s construction team recommenced work on January 7 following a short period of limited activities over the Christmas/New Year break. Workers began applying finishing touches to stops and standing light poles, and continued to prepare track for testing and commissioning.

Testing continues in Mitchell and Gungahlin, according the ‘priority calling’ setup for light rail vehicles at traffic lights.

“Priority calling means the LRVs will receive priority at the lights and motorists should pay close attention to the traffic lights as the patterns and timings will change,” Canberra Metro said.

In another exciting piece of news, the construction team said testing will soon expand to Federal Highway and Northbourne Avenue.

Northbourne will see its first testing on January 22.

“The testing of light rail vehicles along Northbourne Avenue and Federal Highway is an exciting milestone which will give many more people the opportunity to see and experience light rail vehicles travelling along the light rail track,” Canberra Metro said this week.
