Canberra Metro puts out call for drivers

The recruitment drive for staff to operate Canberra’s new light rail network has formally begun, with an advertisement placed in the Canberra Times this past weekend calling for expressions of interest.

Canberra Metro said it’s looking for new light rail drivers to provide high quality and reliable services on the 12 kilometre route from the City to Gunghalin, which is currently under construction.

ACT transport minister Meegan Fitzharris said the Government was looking for around 30 drivers to operate stage one of the project, which includes 14 light rail vehicles – 10 of which are said to be in operation at any one time.

Fitzharris said interested candidates are required to have several skills to be eligible for the roles.

“If you have a current driver’s licence, a minimum of five years’ driving experience on a full licence, a Working With Vulnerable People card, and customer service and conflict resolution experience, this might be the job for you,” Fitzharris said.

“Successful applicants will undertake up to six weeks of training, including four weeks of classroom and practical on-track training, and two weeks with a mentor driver.”

The driver roles will be offered on a permanent basis, but added: “Canberra Metro is a flexible workplace and encourage applications from individuals seeking flexible working environments.”
