<span class="" id="parent-fieldname-description"> Global engineering provider Calibre has won a $23m contract for the detailed design for around 330km of heavy haul main-line railway in the Pilbara region of WA. </span> <p>The railway will run between the in-construction Roy Hill mine and Port Hedland.</p><p>Calibre will design the railway, passing loops and other associated civil infrastructure, on behalf of the Samsung C&T Corporation, which was appointed as the EPC Contractor for the Roy Hill Project in March this year by the mine’s owner, Roy Hill Holdings.</p><p>The Roy Hill Project, which also includes an iron ore processing plant and two purpose-built berths and loading facilities at Port Hedland, is expected to produce 55 million tonnes of iron ore each year when in full swing.</p><p>Calibre’s work on the railway design is expected to employ up to 60 personnel at its peak, and will be finished by the end of 2014, the company said.</p><p>Calibre Group’s acting managing director and chairman, Ray Horsburgh, welcomed the award.</p><p>“It positions the company well for further potential work with Samsung on Roy Hill,” Horsburgh said.</p><p>“We look forward to exploring potential opportunities to work with Samsung on projects in other geographies.”</p><p>Roy Hill mine is located 115km north-east of Newman in the Pilbara region. During the construction of the project as a whole it is expected to employ over 3600 people. Operational manning of over 2000 people is expected following completion.</p>
