Bureau to investigate Colac level crossing failure

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has opened an investigation into the non-operation of barriers and flashing lights as a passenger train travelled through a level crossing at Colac, in south-west Victoria.

According to a report filed recently by the ATSB, a V/Line service running from Melbourne to Warrnambool went through the level crossing at Hart Street, Colac, just after 9.30am on September 22.

The barriers and flashing light protection were inoperative as the train passed through the junction, the Bureau said.

“The area had recently been under a track occupation to facilitate track maintenance activities,” the ATSB detailed.

Fortunately, there was no collision as a result of the incident.

The Bureau didn’t give an estimated timeline for its investigation.
