The Andrews Government says improved safety and accessibility are the goals of a five-week project to upgrade the Bundoora RMIT stop on Yarra Trams route 86.
Victorian public transport minister Melissa Horne on January 1 said the tram stop on the corner of Plenty and McKimmies roads in Bundoora would be upgraded to provide better access for people with mobility needs and parents with prams.
The new stop will include tram crossover and dual tram tracks, allowing trams to change direction more easily, a step the government says should improve tram timetable punctuality and operational efficiency.
The upgrade will mean the stop’s new centre island will have better passenger facilities including shelters, seating and passenger displays.
Work will take place between January 7 and February 11.
Buses will replace trams on associated sections of the network during construction, and there will be some road disruptions during works.
“This is a popular tram stop for the community,” Horne said, “we’re upgrading access to trams for everyone because it’s the right thing to do.”
Local member for Bundoora Colin Brooks added: “These works will provide improved safety and accessibility for thousands of RMIT students and staff who use this stop as an important interchange to the university campus.”
