<p>Rail lobby groups are calling for an extension of Queensland’s Gold Coast railway into the New South Wales north coast – as far as Lismore and Byron Bay. </p> <p>The group, Northern Rivers Trains for the Future, believes a suggestion to extend the rail to Murwillumbah should be taken even further.</p> <p>It believed the gauge compatibility issue could be overcome by laying a third rail, the ABC reported.</p> <p>This "technical hitch" was small compared with the issue of getting governments to secure corridors and understand that rail was the future, the group said. </p> <br />
