Bridge beams installed at Whitehorse Road

beams

Thirteen locally manufactured concrete beams have been lifted into place in Box Hill, Victoria, forming the structure of a temporary bridge being built in Whitehorse Road as part of Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East construction.

The temporary bridging structure will allow use of Whitehorse Road to continue while the new SRL East station is built below ground from 2026.

Just over 28 metres long, the beams were constructed by pre-cast concrete manufacturer Westkon in Melton.

The SRL is both a transport and urban planning project, which will connect Melbourne suburbs, slash travel times and support the delivery of more homes and housing choice where people want to live – on the doorstep of public transport, services, jobs, schools, parks and cafés.

SRL East, from Cheltenham to Box Hill, will provide a cross-suburb connection to jobs, health services study opportunities and retail destinations in Melbourne’s east and south east.

Box Hill’s new underground station is scheduled to open by 2035, with safe, traffic-free access between SRL and the existing metro train station, buses and the 109 tram. A new green boulevard and public space will be created along Whitehorse Road.

With $14 billion provided by the Victorian and Federal governments, the first major tunnelling contract has been awarded for SRL East and the second will be finalised by the end of the year.
