A winning bidder has been named to deliver a $55 million upgrade to the Port of Townsville’s Berth 4 Upgrade project.

Queensland treasurer Curtis Pitt on Wednesday announced Townsville-based CivilPlus Constructions had been awarded the design and construct tender for the primary wharf works component of the project, which Pitt says will improve intermodal handling at the site.

“The upgrade of Bert 4 is one of the $187 million in new projects brought forward as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s Accelerated Works Program for North Queensland,” Pitt said.

“The sooner we get projects like this off the ground, the sooner we can generate more employment opportunities for Queenslanders.”

Pitt says the construction will support 100 jobs and will take around 18 months. The upgrade is being undertaken to allow the port to accommodate projected trade growth.

The treasurer pointed out Townsville is Queensland’s third-largest multi-commodity port, and the upgrade would “underpin” the port’s future as part of North Queensland’s supply chain.

“The upgrade will double the capacity of Berth 4, allowing for an additional two million tonnes of product a year,” Port of Townsville chief executive officer Ranee Crosby said.

“The upgrade will also improve cargo movement through the use of modern handling equipment and improved intermodal transfer of cargo to road and rail.”
