<p>BHP Billiton is going to expand its Area C iron ore mine in Western Australia by 20m tonnes.</p> <p>The annual capacity of BHP Billiton’s 85%-owned mine would double to 42m tonnes, with production starting to ramp up in the fourth quarter of 2007.</p> <p>The company will spend about US$1.3bn ($1.7bn) on the project, which includes replacing port infrastructure and adding to rail haulage capacity.</p> <p>BHP Billiton’s annual production is about 100m tonnes and would increase to 129m tonnes.</p> <p>BHP said in a statement that the alumina market is expected to remain “tight” next year. </p> <p>Strong Chinese demand is continuing and alumina stockpiles are declining, the company said.</p> <p>BHP Billiton has also ordered a further 10 heavy haul diesel electric locomotives from EDI Rail as part of its expansion of rail haulage capacity for the project.</p> <p>It has now ordered 23 of the locos since December 2004. </p> <br />
