Berejiklian to cut Opal fares to $50 per week

The NSW Liberal National Government has promised to reduce the weekly cap on public transport fares from $63.20 to $50, saving roughly 55,000 commuters up to $686 a year.

With the state election looming on March 23 Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced on Monday a reelected Liberal-National Government would reduce the weekly cap on Opal – Transport for NSW’s contactless card payment platform – by as much as 20 per cent from July 1.

“Public transport is a significant cost for regular commuters and we want to make it more affordable,” Berejiklian said.

“This is only possible because we have worked our guts out to repair the budget and now we are in a position to take the pressure off families and lower fares for customers.”

Transport and infrastructure minister Andrew Constance said the Labor Party was not committed to reducing fares.

“During Labor’s 16 long, dark years in office public transport fares went up by 60 per cent,” Constance said.
