<p>The Queensland Government is considering bringing forward QR contracts to try and prevent job losses at engineering company Walkers, according to local press reports.</p> <p>Walkers, part of Downer EDI, has begun retrenching workers from its Maryborough facility. </p> <p>It expects to shed up to a third of its workforce.</p> <p>The company is experiencing a slow period, but predicts work will pick up again in the first half of 2003.</p> <p>Premier Peter Beattie is believed to be considering offering new rail contracts to Walkers immediately as an option for solving the problem.</p> <br />
