Throughout this year, major work has been ongoing to upgrade the 126-year old T3 Bankstown Line between Sydenham and Bankstown in NSW to metro rail standards.
Work has included:
- levelling and rebuilding platforms, and installing services ready for the future platform screen doors
- starting major modifications to concourses and platform buildings along the alignment, including demolition of Campsie concourse to make way for the new plaza
- preparing for the new concourse connecting with Sydney Light Rail at Dulwich Hill Station, including building a new retaining wall
- installing bridge anti-throw protection screens and new trackside cabling and equipment.
More than 6800 tonnes of concrete have been laid so far. More than 700,000 hours of work have been completed, with more than 2500 people working on the upgrade.
Next, work will continue to upgrade platforms, prepare for the installation of lifts, build the concourse to connect with light rail at Dulwich Hill Station and start the refurbishment of heritage buildings and concourses along the alignment.
Metro services on the upgraded Bankstown Line start in 2024, when customers will have a train every four minutes in each direction in the peak – 15 trains an hour each way.
Currently, some stations like Hurlstone Park and Canterbury only have four trains an hour.
