Ballan Station upgrade plans revealed

Plans for the improvement of Ballan Station on the Ballarat Line have been unveiled, revealing a focus on passenger accessibility and integration with other transport modes.

The Ballan Station upgrades will include the construction of an additional platform and a new pedestrian overpass, an improved bus bay layout and new bicycle storage facilities. Improvements will also be made to the station’s security, lighting and landscaping.

A car park will be installed with a drop-off zone on the station’s southern side, while the existing Atkinson Street car park is to be modified so that it integrates with the new bus bay.

State transport minister Jacinta Allan said that the heritage of the station would be preserved in the upgrade process.

“We’ve listened to the local community when designing the upgraded Ballan Station, and added features locals told us were important to them, all while maintaining the historic aesthetic of the station,” Allan said.

“Ballan Station has been an integral part of the community for more than 130 years and these vital upgrades will ensure passengers can continue to use the station well into the future.”

The upgrades will form part of the Ballarat Line Upgrade, which, as part of the $1.75 billion Regional Rail Revival program, is being jointly funded by the Victorian and Commonwealth governments.

The track at Ballan Station is being duplicated along with the 18 kilometres of track between Deer Park West and Melton. A 4.5-kilometre passing loop being is also being built from west of the Ingliston Road level crossing towards Old Melbourne Road.

The passing loop is now under construction, works having begun in April this year. Station works will begin later in 2018. The first stage of Ballarat Line upgrades will be complete by late 2019.
