AusRAIL PLUS: Loram keeps growing stronger

US-based track specialist Loram has been attending AusRAIL for such a length of time that the event just wouldn’t be the same now without the company making its presence felt. 

Among the regulars in recent years has been business development director Thomas Smith, who said Loram had been exhibiting at AusRAIL for more than a decade, and continues to expand and innovate to serve the industry with its sophisticated expertise in track and infrastructure monitoring technology. 

“AusRAIL is a great opportunity to to meet different customers. This year it has been very well-attended and we have been able to meet a lot of our customers all in one place,” he said. 

“We’ve been getting interest from existing and potential customers.” 

Loram is well-known for its rail grinding product offerings, which include equipment and services that serve heavy haul, urban and commuter railroads. Grinding helps safely increase the usable life of rail by reducing surface defects, shaping the rail head to maintain proper wheel interaction and control vertical and lateral wear.  

But there are many more strings to the company’s bow. 

“Loram is in Australia in a big way with our rail grinding, but we also have quite a few other products that we’re introducing to our customers,” Smith said. 

For example, Loram focuses on using the latest technology available to plan for efficient ballast maintenance.  

Loram pairs GPR, LiDAR, high resolution video, GIS, track geometry, and other forms of data with advanced analytics to create a multifaceted track health report. With a complete picture of the ballast section and drainage characteristics, the root causes of poor track performance can be understood and appropriate maintenance solutions can be identified. 

Smith said for targeted ballast maintenance, the Loram TracVac (LTV) was a productive machine of choice.  

“With its powerful, rail-mounted specialty excavating machine, it can remove up to 28 cubic metres of material per hour using mechanical agitation and airflow,” he said. 

The company also demonstrated its range of friction management products. 

“We offer both gauge face and top-of-rail solutions, with the modifier consumables available in biodegradable, synthetic, and water-based versions,” he said.  

“Loram’s gauge face lubricants are designed for transit or heavy haul applications, designed to be pumpable in extreme temperatures, and are biodegradable. 

“Our top-of-rail friction modifiers are specifically designed for wayside applications, help reduce noise, extend rail and wheel life, and contribute to fuel/energy savings.”
