The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will look into safeworking procedures after workers were within the danger zone as a Sydney Trains passenger service approached them on September 3.
At around 11:30am on September 3, 2018, Sydney Trains passenger service 45-E was travelling towards Flemington Station, in Sydney’s inner west, when the driver saw track workers in the danger zone, according to the ATSB.
“The driver applied the train’s brakes and the workers were able to reach a safe place before the train passed their location,” the Bureau wrote on September 7.
No injuries or damage was reported.
“The track workers had entered the danger zone before confirming they were protected under Lookout Working, which uses lookouts as the only safety measure,” the ATSB explained.
During its investigation, the Bureau plans to obtain an engineering report, and interview the crew.
The Bureau expects a final report by the end of 2018.
