ATSB to investigate Creighton derailment

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the January 21 derailment of a freight train at Creighton in northern Victoria.

A safety investigation brief released recently by the ATSB details the derailment of SCT Logistics train 6BM9 at Creighton at 3.40pm on January 21, 2019.

The train was on its way to Laverton, Victoria, having left Bromelton, Queensland.

The brief doesn’t detail which or how many of the train’s two locomotives and 31 wagons derailed, but it describes the damage to the train as ‘minor’, and the damage to the track as ‘severe’.

No injuries were reported.

The investigation, which is being led by the Office of the Chief Investigator, Transport Safety on behalf of the ATSB, is targeted for completion in the fourth quarter of 2019.

“Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify those affected and seek safety action to address the issue,” the Bureau said.
