<p>Australian Rail Track Corporation has put on display the environmental impact statement for one of its most important projects to decongest the Hunter Valley/Newcastle coal rail network. </p> <p>The $40m project at Sandgate will separate the freight line into the Port Waratah Coal Services terminal on Kooragang Island from the main passenger line.</p> <p>The overpass and related work should be completed by the end of next year.</p> <p>The project is part of $66m being spent on reducing specific bottlenecks.</p> <p>This, in turn, is part of an overall $152m being spent on rail, bridge, and signalling improvements to improve train speed and movement.</p> <p>The Sandgate project includes creating a refuge for endangered frogs.</p> <p>The Hunter Valley produces a third of Australia’s coal exports. </p> <br />
