The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) expects the line 35 km north of Whyalla to be repaired “later this week” after a freight train derailed there yesterday, a spokeswoman said today (Wednesday, May 23).

An Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) investigation into the derailment, which saw 25 of the train’s 36 rail-trucks spread at all angles along the tracks, will run along with an internal probe by OneSteel, which has iron ore transported on the route.

Flood damage had been blamed for the incident, given that waters damaged the route after heavy rains several months ago, but the ARTC spokeswoman said the two incidents were not necessarily related.

A witness to the accident, Jacob Hodgman, said the train had derailed at the spot where the tracks were repaired after heavy rain in January, the ABC reported.

The ARTC Ballast train 3MR2, operated by South Spur Rail Company, was travelling from Whyalla to Port Augusta, the Adelaide Advertiser reported.
