The Australian Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (ARISO) is set to host the 26th annual Rail Safety Conference on May 19-20, 2026 at the Pullman Melbourne on the Park.
This landmark event arrives at a pivotal moment for Australia’s rail industry, as the sector navigates unprecedented transformation in safety standards, productivity, and network interoperability.
A strategic industry gathering
Now in its 26th year, the conference will convene government bodies, railway operators, engineers, project managers, and industry experts from across the rail safety spectrum.
Key conference themes
The 2026 program addresses four critical pillars:
- Governance and Leadership: Opening with a Ministerial Keynote from Gabrielle Williams MP, Victorian Minister for Transport, the conference will explore national rail reform through presentations from key leaders including Dr Natalie Pelham (Chief Executive Officer of the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator) and Michael Hopkins (Chief Executive Officer of the National Transport Commission), who will discuss the National Rail Action Plan.
- Train Control Systems and Interoperability: A dedicated stream will examine Australia’s digital transformation, featuring insights from the United Kingdom’s European Train Control System rollout presented by Tom Lee (Director of Standards, Rail Safety and Standards Board UK), alongside local perspectives from the Australian Rail Track Corporation and National Transport Commission on implementing Australia’s first mandatory rail standards, before an industry-wide operational safety panel explores the leadership required to drive this transformational change.
- Safety excellence: Sessions will cover competency frameworks, safety investigations, level crossing innovations, and emerging hazards including e-bike battery safety, with contributions from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, Office of Transport Safety Investigations, and leading academic institutions.
- Network Integration: A chief engineers panel will address productivity challenges, while case studies from Melbourne Metro Tunnel and various operators will showcase operational readiness strategies.
Innovative program features
The 2026 conference introduces several exciting elements:
- The Great Debate: Industry experts will tackle the provocative motion “Driverless systems are the only way forward for rail safety.”
- Game Changer Lounge, sponsored by Alium Works: An interactive networking space with engaging activities.
- Rail Safety Think Tank: Spotlighting the power of industry-academic collaboration, these sessions will showcase the latest cutting-edge research programs and initiatives shaping the future of rail safety.
- Next Generation Scholarship: Ten young professionals (aged 30 and under) will receive conference scholarships, as well as competing for the inaugural Next Generation Award.
Awards dinner celebration
The ARISO Rail Safety Conference Awards Dinner on May 19 will recognize excellence across four categories: TrackSAFE Frontline Worker Safety Award, Industry Safety Professional of the Year, Advancing Safety and Productivity Award, and the new Next Generation Award.
