The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) has released the Future of Rail: The Path to 2040 report in conjunction with Scyne, highlighting the key opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for the rail sector.

The report aims to provide the industry with a strategic lens, enabling the sector to face the growing challenges of population growth, climate risk, economic uncertainty and more, which are reshaping the way that both people and goods move around. How infrastructure is planned and delivered is also changing as a result.

It’s designed to inform decision-makers in government and industry by delivering a forward-looking evidence base to support investment attraction, policy alignment, and strategic planning across the rail sector.

The report outlines 10 key ‘megatrends’, which the ARA and Scyne believe will define the operating environment in transport over the coming decades.

These 10 megatrends include (1) serving a growing and changing society; (2) responding to the new geography of growth; (3) adapting to shifting travel and freight patterns; as well as (4) delivering infrastructure in a new fiscal era: After a decade of record investment, infrastructure priorities are shifting toward resilience, optimisation, and long-term value.

Other megatrends include (5) driving the shift to net zero, (6) building resilience into national networks, (7) harnessing automation and digital systems, (8) rebuilding sovereign capability, (9) solving the workforce challenge, and (10) using pricing as a strategic lever.

These trends are grouped into four domains, each addressing a different aspect of long-term change.

The report also includes a call to leadership, communicating that the rail industry in both New Zealand and Australia is “…ready to lead. What is needed now is sustained commitment to policy reform, long-term investment, and a shared understanding of rail’s role as a universal public service,” the report states.
