Construction on the entrance canopy at Melbourne’s Anzac Station is forging ahead, after crews recently craned in 13 timber cross beams, each weighing around 4500kg, along with steel perimeter beams and 164 diagonal timber sections that make up the ‘diagrid’.
This diagonally intersecting framework will be a distinctive feature of the canopy when looking up from the concourse level.
Workers are now installing 190 cross-laminated timber panels on the underside of the canopy and will then install aluminium roof sheets and skylights. The canopy is expected to be finished in around 3 months’ time.
Below ground, the station concourse is taking shape with stairs and escalators now installed. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems are also being fitted out.
When it opens, Anzac Station will be the first in Melbourne with a direct platform-to-platform connection between the train and tram network, easing pressure off the busiest tram corridor in the world.
