All five of Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel stations are now complete, ahead of the new tunnel opening to passengers in December this year.
Major construction is officially finished on the last two stations, Town Hall and State Library.
These are the first CBD train stations to be built in over 40 years.
Located below Swanston Street, between La Trobe and Franklin streets, State Library Station features 12 metre-high columns with massive beams, echoing the architecture of the State Library of Victoria.
It also has a 10 metre-high arched ceiling above the platforms, with chandelier lights designed and made in Melbourne.
The new station will connect passengers directly to RMIT University and Melbourne City Baths and create a new connection to the Queen Victoria Market.
It has two entrances: a main entrance on the corner of Swanston and La Trobe streets and one on Franklin Street, directly outside RMIT.
It also shares a concourse with Melbourne Central Station, allowing commuters to change between Metro Tunnel and City Loop services without needing to tap off.
Town Hall Station and State Library Station being finished follows the completion of Arden, Parkville and Anzac stations.
“It’s no coincidence that the two city stations were the last to be completed,” the Victorian Government said in a press release.
“The CBD location, along with their depth, always meant a longer and more complex build compared to Arden, Parkville and Anzac stations.
“With all five stations now complete, we’re getting ready for the opening of the Metro Tunnel later this year.”
