Around 1,171m tonnes of freight were transported in Australia during the 12 months ended March 31,2001, according to new Bureau of Statistics findings.

This translated to 320,108m tonne-km, which was predominantly moved by rail, road and sea.

Rail accounted for 42%, sea for 30% and road for 28%. Airfreight accounted for less than 1%.

In terms of total tonnage, road and rail made up 96%.

Because of the long average hauls for domestic shipping, sea freight accounted for a much higher proportion of tonne-km travelled than total tonnage moved.
