Two people are lucky to have survived a collision at a level crossing in southern Wollongong on Monday morning, after their car broke down across the junction.

Police said the vehicle’s occupants  were able to escape before it was struck by a train on Monday morning around 6.45am at a level crossing in Unanderra, NSW.

“Police were told the vehicle broke down on the tracks, with the two occupants being able to escape before it was struck,” NSW Police said. “They were uninjured.”

The level crossing is the intersection of the Illawarra Line with the Princes Highway.

A photo shared by Police NSW on Facebook shows a NSW TrainLink train which appears to have collided with a utility vehicle.

Given the collision took place around 6.45am, it is likely the train was the Dapto to Sydney service, which would have arrived at Unanderra station at 6.48am.

NSW TrainLink alerted passengers on Monday morning of subsequent delays.

“The South Coast Line is partially closed in both directions between Wollongong and Dapto due to a car and train accident at Unanderra,”  the authority said at 7.30am. “Buses will replace trains between Wollongong and Dapto but are yet to arrive.”

Buses were operating from 7.50am.

Services resumed on the line at 10.48am.
