The five year contract is worth approximately A$284 million, with an option to extend the contract for a further three years.
This continues the business partnership between Ansaldo STS and Metroselskabet, established in 1996, when Ansaldo STS won the tender to provide engineering, systems integration, rail electrification equipment and vehicles for Copenhagen’s driverless metro system.
Ansaldo STS has been responsible for the management of the Copenhagen Metro since it commenced operations in October 2002.
The Ansaldo STS/Metroselskabet partnership has proved to be an award winning one. In 2009 the Copenhagen Metro was named “Best driverless metro”, and in 2008 was awarded “Best metro in the world” and “Best metro in Europe”.
The Copenhagen Metro runs on two lines from suburban Vanlse to Vestamager and Copenhagen Airport covering 21 km, including 10 km in tunnels and 11km on elevated tracks and embankment.
